Today there are <strong>9 Bergamo cheeses that have officially obtained the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO)<\/strong>, and with 150 active alpine dairies, the Bergamo province comes in first among Italy\u2019s provinces.<\/p>\n<p>Typical cheeses include Branzi, Bitto, Stracchino, Agr\u00ec di Valtorta all of which are renowned, but the &#8220;Strachitunt&#8221;, an ancient cheese dating back to 1380 that has survived, will soon boast the prestigious brand, earning international fame, owing to the tenacity of a few breeders and cheesemakers in Val Taleggio.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019 Bergamo was awarded a &#8220;UNESCO Creative City for Gastronomy&#8221; thanks to the dairy production of the Orobie valleys, with its <strong>30 traditional cheeses, 9 of which are PDO and 3 Slow-Food artisan food lines.<\/strong><\/div>\n<p><br class=\"clear\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div  class=\"one ppb_card_two_cols_with_image\" style=\"position:relative;padding:40px 0 40px 0;\" >\n<div class=\"standard_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"page_content_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"inner\">\n<div class=\"one_half parallax_scroll\" style=\"width:40%;position:absolute;left:90px;padding:40px;z-index:2;block !important;background:#ffffff;\" data-stellar-ratio=\"1.3\">\n<h2 class=\"ppb_title\" ><span class=\"ppb_title_first\" >MOSCATO<\/span>DI SCANZO<\/h2>\n<div class=\"page_header_sep left\" ><\/div>\n<p>Considered a pearl of Bergamo wine production, <strong>Moscato di Scanzo is in fact the only wine in the Bergamo area to boast the Guaranteed Certified Designation of Origin (GCDO)<\/strong> as it is produced with an ancient grape variety grown almost exclusively on the hills of Scanzorosciate. It is so closely linked to the region that the place name is also its grape variety.<\/p>\n<p>It is a wine from ancient history, dating back to the Romans and Celtic populations. Grapevines have been grown constantly in Franciacorta since Roman times, thanks to the favourable climatic conditions and soil.<\/p>\n<p>The name &#8220;Franciacorta&#8221; has an unsure etymology: its name might be derived from &#8220;corte franca\u201d (free court), as a region not subject to duty, to which all the other areas under the rule of Venice were commonly subject. There are those who even trace it back to Charlemagne who, arriving at the gates of Brescia during the campaign to conquer Lombardy, and admiring the hilly landscape similar to that in France, exclaimed that he had arrived in &#8220;Little France&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Today the name <strong>&#8220;Franciacorta&#8221; has become synonymous with the same DOCG sparkling wine<\/strong> produced in the many area vineyards.
